WORKER CO-OPERATIVES IN THE UK

The history of the co-operative movement in the UK stretches back over 200 years. The High Street retail Co-operative Societies will be familiar to people, but there has also been a long tradition of successful worker co-operatives.

Many of the co-operatives in this country were started by people with little or no previous experience of running a business, and yet worker co-operatives have a better survival rate than new start-up businesses generally. This is often put down to the high level of commitment shown by the members of a worker co-operative and the assistance provided by co-operative support agencies, such as Sheffield Co-operative Development Group.

The Co-operative Sector in Britain unified in the United Kingdom Co-operative Council includes major businesses in the fields of Insurance, Banking, Wholesale, Retail, Farming and Building Societies.

It is the biggest business in many fields and is owned and controlled by many millions of members.
